Some great smokes and fall approaching
It seems as though fall has arrived all of a sudden this year. Last week I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt and now long pants are in order. The evenings are a pleasant cool and a light jacket is plenty.
I was feeling like a light aromatic tobacco might be in order but I wasn't willing to commit to something overly topped. After some deliberation I landed on Peter Stokkebye Luxury Twist Flake. It's a very pleasant Virginia that gives off an exquisite vanilla aroma from the jar. In fact the jar note can be down right intense which would lead one to speculate that the flavor when smoked would be a bit too much. I don't find this to be the case at all. This tobacco smokes wonderfully and tastes sublime. My pipe today was a Kaywoodie Custom Grain Bulldog, an estate pipe I was lucky enough to nab on eBay several months ago. It smokes like a dream and has beautiful lines. There is something great about a straight up, no frills Bulldog.
While I smoked that pipe I browsed the forums a bit and heard that there might be some Samuel Gawith Cabbies Mixture available at 4noggins. I quickly maneuvered to their website and was delighted to find that there was indeed some available. Sadly not in the 250g box but in a limited quantity of 2 tins per day. I was happy with that (it's for the best as my tobacco budget had already been exceeded 😬). I'm excited to tuck those away for a long nap when they arrive. In addition I ordered some mylar bags which I noticed were running low during my work in the cellar last week.
This evening I enjoyed some Rattray's Marlin Flake in a Peterson System B42. The flavor was nice but I did push the tobacco too hard. I find that I am prone to doing that with my P-lip pipes. It's a lesson learned with a burnt roof of the mouth. Not a comfortable lesson. I'm on call for work and my smoke was interrupted by an incident. When I returned to the pipe I was rewarded with a nice cool burning and well behaved pipe. This reinforces a lesson I learned early in my pipe smoking journey but don't heed often enough. If it's burning hot, put it down. Not only does the pipe and the tobacco need to cool but you need to realign yourself. It's not something I need to remember, it's something I need to do.
I'm excited for tomorrow morning's bowl already. I don't know what I'll be smoking but Virginia is really sounding nice 👌. Have some great smokes!
